ESTUDIANTES adds swingman Welsch
Asefa Estudiantes introduced veteran swingman Jiri Welsch as its newest signing on Wednesday after the two sides agreed on a one-year contract with an option for a second season. Welsch (202, 30) has played for fellow Spanish club Unicaja for the past four seasons. Last year he averaged 6.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 16 Euroleague games and 6.4 points in the Spanish League. Welsch helped Unicaja reach the 2007 Euroleague Final Four and twice reach the Spanish League semifinals. He grew up with Pardubice in the Czech Republic before moving to Sparta of Prague in 1998 and two years later to Union Olimpija of Slovenia, where he made his Euroleague debut and emerged as one of the top prospects in Europe. Welsch has also played in the NBA with Golden State, Boston, Cleveland and Milwaukee. Estudiantes also announced that Rodrigo De La Fuente, who had been training with the team, will not be signed.
