CAJASOL retools with Popovic at point
Bojan Popovic - Efes PilsenCajasol Sevilla moved to retool its backcourt following an injury to starter Earl Calloway by signing veteran playmaker Bojan Popovic. The sides agreed to terms on a three-month deal with an option to extend it for the rest of the season. The contract is pending a physical exam. Popovic (190, 27) returns to the Eurocup for the first time since winning the competition in 2006 with Dynamo Moscow. Popovic grew up with FMP Zeleznik, where he made his professional debut and helped the club win the Serbian Cup twice, reach the ULEB Cup semifinals and win the Adriatic League. He joined Dynamo in 2005 and returned from injury to become a key factor in the title game as Dynamo won the ULEB Cup that season. After two years in Moscow, Popovic signed for Unicaja and later for Guipuzkoa Basket, also in Spain, before joining Lietuvos Rytas last summer. He ranked first in steals, with 2.4 per game, and third in assists, 5.4 on average, in the Euroleague regular season regular season with L. Rytas. He also scored 11.2 points per game and was chosen as the Euroleague's October MVP. Popovic then moved to Istanbul for the rest of the season, but played a lesser role with Efes in the Top 16. He signed over the summer for Partizan, but the sides agreed to part ways before the season began. As a member of the Serbian national team, Popovic won the silver medal at EuroBasket 2009.
