BAYERN MUNICH inks Foster, Benzing, Ford
FC Bayern Munich got closer to completing its roster for its Eurocup debut this season by inking guard Je'Kel Foster, versatile forward Robin Benzing and center Sharrod Ford, the club announced Thursday. Foster (1.91 meters, 27 years old) arrives from Vanoli-Braga Cremona, where he averaged 12.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 29 Italian League games last season. He has also played for EWE Baskets Oldenburg and EnBW Ludwigsburg in Germany, as well as for Paris-Levallois in France. He helped Oldenburg to win the German League title in 2009 and played the 2009-10 Euroleague with his team, averaging 12.2 points in 10 games. Benzing (2.08 meters, 22 years old) is one of the most promising big men in European basketball. He arrives from Ratiopharm Ulm, averaging 15.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in 33 German League games last season. Benzing has also played for TV Langen in Germany, as well as being a regular member of the German national team. He was the top scorer at the 2009 European under-20 Championships, averaging 22.2 points. Ford (2.06 meters, 29 years old) arrives from Fabi Shoes Montegranaro and led the Italian League in rebounds (10.4 rpg.) and blocks (2.3 bpg.) last season, averaging 15.8 points in 30 games. Ford has also played for Carife Ferrara and Virtus Bologna in Italy, Spartak St.Petersburg in Russia, Alba Berlin in Germany, Phoenix in the NBA and Fayetteville in the NBA Development League. He won the 2006 German Cup title with Alba and also lifted the 2009 EuroChallenge trophy with Virtus. Benzing and Foster signed respective two-year deals while Ford penned a one-year contract.
"Jekel and Ben Hansbrough were our top candidates at guard. They give us, along with our other players, great talent and experience at both guard positions. Jekel has shown that he can play different roles in the German League, so we are happy that he has chosen to play for Bayern," sports director Marko Pesic said. "Sharrod has the skills you expect from a center and that is very important in our team. His aggressive playing style and versatility at both ends make him a great addition to our team," he added. "I am excited to play for Bayern Munich. I see many familiar faces, a top-class coach and a professional enviroment," Benzing said. "I want to win as many games as possible with Bayern but be able to keep developing at the same time."
