BENETTON BASKET bags Becirovic
Sani Becirovic - Union OlimpijaSani Becirovic returns to Italy to play for his sixth club in the country after signing with Benetton Basket Treviso. Becirovic (1.95 meters, 30 years old) is a former Euroleague champion and a runner-up to the scoring title, who has been among the top guards in Europe over the past decade. He arrives from Russian giant CSKA Moscow, whom he joined midway through last season and averaged 5.7 points and 1.9 assists in 17 games to help the club with the Russian League title. Becirovic grew up with KK Bistrica and began his professional career at Pivovarna Lasko in his native Slovenia before moving to Union Olimpija as an 18-year-old. There he was the Euroleague runner-up in scoring when he averaged 20.7 points per game in the 2000-01 season. After two seasons, Becirovic moved to Virtus Bologna and helped that team reach the title game at the 2002 Final Four. A serious knee injury limited Becirovic to just two Euroleague games with Krka Novo Mesto of Slovenia over the next three seasons, but he returned to full-time status with Varese in 2004-05 and was back in the Euroleague with Fortitudo Bologna a year later. In the summer of 2006, Becirovic moved to Athens to play for Panathinaikos, with whom he won the Euroleague in 2007. He has since played for Lottomatica Roma and Olimpia Milano in Italy and Turk Telekom in Turkey. Benetton will be Becirovic’s second Eurocup club after Varese. Among his career highlights are winning the Euroleague, plus one Slovenian and one Russian League title, the Greek League twice and a total of five domestic cups in Slovenia, Greece and Italy. He is also a regular with the Slovenian national team.

"I am delighted to return to Italy and be part of a big team like Benetton Basket," Becirovic said. "In the past I had been close several times to Treviso and now that it has materialized, I am really proud to join one of the most important clubs in European basketball. I know that the club is working to continue its glorious history in the future, and I think for me this is a great opportunity to confirm my return to a talented environment where I can best express myself. I have already spoken to coach Sasha Djordjevic at length, and he was one of the main reasons for my decision. He is certainly a coach who understands how to use a player like me. I like his ideas and his system."
