CEZ NYMBURK brings Czech star Welsch home
October 22, 2012
After a dozen seasons abroad, Czech star Jiri Welsch will play basketball in his homeland after signing a two-year deal with Czech champion CEZ Basketball Nymburk. The veteran guard was introduced at a press conference on Monday. Welsch (2.02 meters, 32 years old) last played at home for Sparta Prague in 2000. He arrives from Belgian club Spirou Basket Charleroi, with whom Welsch averaged 6.8 points in 10 Turkish Airlines Euroleague games. He has totaled 121 Euroleague games over seven seasons between Union Olimpija Ljubljana, Unicaja Malaga and Spirou. Welsch has also played for Asefa Estudiantes in Spain and in the NBA with Golden State, Boston, Cleveland and Milwaukee. He grew up with Pardubice in the Czech Republic before moving to Sparta Prague in 1998 and two years later to Union Olimpija in Slovenia, where he made his Euroleague debut and emerged as one of the top prospects in Europe. Among his career accomplishments, Welsch won the Slovenian League and Adriatic League titles as well as two Slovenian Cups with Olimpija and later helped Unicaja reach the 2007 Euroleague Final Four and twice reach the Spanish League semifinals.
"I wanted to play at home and CEZ Nymburk has a great reputation in European basketball; everyone knows its quality," Welsch told reporters Monday. "Everything came together well and I'm glad I'm here."
