Panionios BC Athens will have its third coach in as many games after hiring Yannis Sfairopoulos for the rest of the season. Sfairopoulos was an assistant coach at CSKA Moscow last season under Jonas Kazlauskas. Previous to that, he had his first head coaching experience at Greek club Kolossos Rhodes, making the domestic playoffs for three consecutive seasons between 2008 and 2011. He has been a long-time figure on the bench of Olympiacos, too, working as an assistant there under Kazlauskas, Pini Gershon and Panagiotis Giannakis from 2005 to 2008. Prior to that, he was an assistant at PAOK Thessaloniki from 1997 to 2005. Likewise, he has been an assistant coach of the Greek national team on five occasions under four different head coaches. Sfairopoulos replaces departed Panionios boss Thanassis Skourtopoulos. Last week, in the interim between head coaches, assistant Nikos Economou directed the team in a home game lost to Unics Kazan. Panionios won its first road game under Sfairopoulos to go 6-1 in the Greek League. He will debut in the Eurocup on the road Wednesday against Unics Kazan.
