Budivelnik's Delaney breaks several semis records!
Mar 20, 2013
Although it wasn't enough for his team to win, Budivelnik Kiev guard Malcolm Delaney started the Eurocup Semifinals in record-breaking fashion on Wednesday with a scoring explosion never seen in the competition beyond the regular season. Delaney finished with 38 points to set a new semifinal scoring mark in the competition, the first of his four records on the night. The others were his performance index rating of 47, the highest in a semifinal game, and his 14-for-16 shooting from the foul line, the most free throws attempted or made in a semifinal game during the Eurocup's 11-season history. Before Delaney on Wednesday, no player had ever scored more than 35 points in a Eurocup game after the Last 16 round, a mark that had belonged to Milan Gurovic of Crvena Zvezda for a quarterfinal performance in 2006. The previous semifinal scoring mark, 34 points, was shared by Hapoel Jerusalem players from two different seasons: Willie Solomon in 2004 and Mario Austin in 2006.
On Wednesday, Delaney hit Budivelnik's first and last baskets of the game, both from downtown. In between, he was unstoppable, with quarter-by-quarter totals of 13, 6, 7 and 12 points. In addition to his free throws, which came from Delaney drawing 10 fouls, he buried 6 of 9 three-pointers and 3 out of his 4 two-point shots. He also pulled 8 rebounds to go with an assist and a steal for his performance index rating of 47, tied for the sixth-highest in competition history.
