Alba Berlin signs Thompson and Dojcin
Alba Berlin was busy on Friday, inking a pair of forwards as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Dijon Thompson (201, 24) and Dragan Dojcin (204, 31) immediately upgrade the Berlin frontline and could make Alba a force to be reckoned with. Thompson, who signed a one-year deal, arrives from the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBDL. He became a star during his college career at UCLA, averaging an impressive 18.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Thompson then moved on to the NBA and played in 10 games for the Phoenix Suns during the 2005-06 season. Last year he joined Albuquerque and posted 20.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. In January 2007 the Atlanta Hawks called him to the NBA for 10 days, during which he played in six games. However he then returned to the Thunderbirds, where he finished the season. Playing in Berlin marks the first time Thompson will play overseas.
Dojcin arrives from Greek side Panionios Athens, signing a one-year deal with an option for a second season. He began his career with Kolubara and went on to play for Zdravlje Leskovac and Pivovarna Lasko before first crossing paths with his new coach, Luka Pavicevic, at Atlas Banka Belgrade in 2004-05. There Dojcin averaged 11.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. In 2005-06 Dojcin moved to Khimik OPZ Yuzny in Ukraine and last season was with Panionios, where he had 8.6 points and 3.2 boards per game in the Greek League.
“Dijon Thompson is a very talented and versatile player with great ambition,” Alba coach Luka Pavicevic said in a statement on the team's website. “He is exactly the type of player we were looking for at his position. He comes to Europe for the first time and time will need to get accustomed to the European life-style and basketball. Naturally we hope that this conversion goes as quickly as possible... Dojcin is the type of player we need on this team. His hard work and understanding of the game always help his teams.”
