Capitals pick up Ian Hanavan, Alton Mason
Hanzevast Capitals Groningen made a pair of key pickups for the coming season by signing forward Ian Hanavan and guard Alton Mason. Hanavan (200, 27) arrives from Belgian side Basket Groot Leuven, where he spent the past three seasons. Last year he posted 13.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game in 35 appearances for Leuven. He's familiar with the Dutch League after starting his professional career in the Netherlands with Omniworld Almere during the 2003-04 campaign, exploding onto the scene with 18.5 points and a league-best 12.2 rebounds per game.
Mason (185, 30) is a proven scorer who put up 10.7 points and 2.1 assists in half a season for BG Karlsruhe in Germany last year. He began the season in Turkey with Tofas Bursa and also spent time with Barons/LMT Riga, averaging 17.2 points, 2.8 assists and 2.2 steals. Mason has previously played for Tournai Estaimpuis, Telindus Oostende and Euphony Bree in Belgium; Honka Espoo Playboys in Finland and Olimpia GE Larisa in Greece. He won the 2005 Belgian championship with Bree.
