One season after returning to the Euroleague, DKV Joventut Badalona returns to the ULEB Cup ready to display some exciting basketball led by two of the brightest young stars on the planet. The “Ricky and Rudy Show” refers to teenage point guard Ricky Rubio and high-flying scorer Rudy Fernandez, who continue to thrive under coach Aito Garcia-Reneses. And the supporting cast this season is as good as ever, making Joventut a real threat to go far. Rubio's biggest impact as a Euroleague rookie last season was with his eye-popping and record-setting steals totals, but his feel for the game and court-vision make him an excellent playmaker too. Demond Mallet will be there to share the ball handling – and scoring – duties at point guard. Fernandez won the Euroleague Rising Star award for his ability to score with crowd-pleasing slams or by hitting smooth jumpers from downtown. Lubos Barton is a complete player at small forward, who can help inside and out, on the boards or with his shot. Tough Ferran Laviña is a difference-maker on the defensive side. Upfront the team enjoys a wealth of big men, starting with well-rounded Jan-Hendrik Jagla, a big man with excellent shooting range. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca is a ULEB Cup champion and a threatening defensive presence in the paint. Jerome Moiso is a steady center, whose impact is felt mostly on the boards, but can also score from close range. Lonny Baxter will join the team late, but brings with him low-post muscle that converts to points and rebounds. How far this team ultimately gets could be a function of Fernandez and Rubio, but all the pieces are there for a historic run at ULEB Cup glory.

DKV Joventut started its incredible tradition in 1930, as the club's reputation from the start was based on its faith in homegrown players even as it became one of the best teams on the continent in the mid-1990s.
Joventut keeps bringing out homegrown talents like Rudy Fernandez and Ricky Rubio, who join the long list of Badalona greats featuring Jordi Villacampa, the Margall brothers, the Jofresa brothers, Nino Buscato and foreigners like Moka Slavnic, Joe Galvin and Corny Thompson, who buried the game-winning three-pointer when Joventut won the Euroleague title in 1994. Joventut emerged as a national power by winning four Spanish Cup titles between 1948 and 1958 and its first league title in 1967. It was not until Slavnic arrived in Badalona that the team would claim its second league title in 1978. The club won its first European title by lifting the 1981 Korac Cup title. Joventut would add a second Korac Cup title in 1990, sweeping the two-way finals against Scavolini. Soon after moving to Palau Olimpic, Joventut won consecutive Spanish League titles in 1991 and 1992, the year in which the team lost the Euroleague final against Partizan in dramatic fashion. Joventut would only wait two more years to lift the crown, however. Villacampa and Thompson hit crucial three-pointers to beat Olympiacos 59-57 and win the Euroleague title in come-from-behind fashion. Joventut went on to add a Spanish King's Cup title in 1997 but a downturn followed. Joventut started to shine again in the newborn ULEB Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2003. Joventut had its breakout season in 2006, as it advanced to the Spanish League semifinals for the first time since 1997 and won a European trophy, the 2006 FIBA EuroCup. This season, Joventut returned to the Spanish League semifinals and made the Euroleague Top 16, thrilling the entire continent with its fun-to-watch basketball. The future looks brighter than ever for Joventut, a giant ready to get back to its glory days.
