2008-09 EUROCUP Draw, criteria and procedures
EUROCUP qualification rounds draw

QUALIFYING ROUND 1

  • There will be a seeded draw. Seeded teams will play the second game at home.

  • The criteria used for assigning the seeded teams is based upon: (1) Teams that have participated in final phases of Euroleague Basketball, ULEB Cup and FIBA Eurocup. (2) Number of participations in ULEB competitions.

PROCEDURE

  • The draw will be conducted with two different urns. One of the urns will have the seeded teams and the other urn the un-seeded teams.
  • As a team has been drawn, it will be placed directly in the next available spot in the bracket, starting with QR 1 A.

QUALIFYING ROUND 2

  • Seeded draw. The teams who enter directly into the second qualification round will play the second game at home, whilst the winners of the first qualification round will play the first game at home.

PROCEDURE

  • There will be one single urn with the seeded teams. As those teams are drawn, they will be placed directly in the next available spot in the bracket, starting with QR 2 A.


EUROCUP regular season draw

The criteria and procedure for the 2008-2009 Regular Season Draw will follow the guidelines
approved by the General Assembly.

GROUP DRAW (32 TEAMS)

* The draw will be held according to seeds.

  • The 24 teams qualified directly will be divided into three seeds of eight teams each, in accordance with the final standings of Euroleague Basketball, ULEB Cup, and national competitions in the 2007-2008 season as follows.
  • Starting with the 1 Seeds, 07-08 Euroleague Basketball teams are placed first, according to the team ranking in the previous Euroleague Basketball season.
  • Next, we place the 07-08 ULEB Cup teams according to the ranking in this competition.
  • Lastly, we place the teams that did not participate in any ULEB competition in the previous season. The order in which they are placed is based upon the ranking in ULEB Cup of the team from their country that did not qualify for the following season.
  • The 4 Seeds will be composed with the Qualifying Round Match-ups.

GROUP DRAW RESTRICTIONS

The restrictions when drawing the teams for the groups is the following:

  • 2 teams from the same country cannot coincide in the first three Seeds of the Regular Season group.


The procedure to be applied to the Draw in Berlin is the following:

GROUP DRAW PROCEDURE

  • The levels will be drawn successively from the 1st to the 4th until all 24 teams and the eight qualification round match-ups have been selected.
  • For each spot drawn, the urn will be emptied and refilled with only those teams from the level drawn without restrictions. I.e. If a spot is to be drawn where there is a team from a specific country, the teams from the country in question will not be placed in the urn.
  • In the Regular Season, teams from the same country may not coincide in the same group. Therefore, when drawing teams from the 2 and 3 Seeds, only those teams from a country different that the ones previously drawn in the same group will be placed in the urn.
  • If the situation requires so, a team may be placed directly in order to follow the restrictions mentioned above.
  • The coincidence of teams from the same country will not be allowed, unless it will be a team coming from the Qualification Rounds.
  • Each Qualification Round Match-up will be named from A to H, in order to allow drawing the Qualification Rounds before these spots have been decided.

Drawing the teams as explained above, will allow restrictions to be respected and will eliminate all possibilities of a blocked situation.

CALENDAR DRAW

A random computer draw determines the final position of the teams within their group.

  • The pairings calendar for the Regular Season will be drawn by allocating numbers from 1 to 4 to the teams of each group. This will establish the match-ups for the entire Regular Season.
  • The Regular Season games will be held according to the following chart:
          1st Competition Date 1-3 2-4
          2nd Competition Date 4-1 3-2
          3rd Competition Date 3-4 1-2
          4th Competition Date 4-3 2-1
          5th Competition Date 3-1 4-2
          6th Competition Date 1-4 2-3
Non-coincidence numbers (when one team plays at home, the other plays away): 1 with 4; 2 with 3.

CALENDAR DRAW RESTRICTIONS

  • The designated ULEB Cup Opening Game, will be held on November 25, 2008. Specific numbers will be allocated to the teams participating in the Opening Game.
  • Teams playing in the same city/arena: Istanbul, Belgrade, Riga: The non-coincidence number will be allocated to teams that play in the same city/arena, so as to ensure that a Euroleague Basketball game is held in that city every week, instead of two games in the same week. Since the coincidence of teams from the same city/arena will only take place if the counterpart qualifies through the Qualification Rounds, the specific Qualifying Round Match-up will be given the non-coinciding number to its counterpart.
