Red Star brings Pesic to bench
After weeks of negotiations, Red Star Belgrade on Monday named former Euroleague champion Svetislav Pesic its new head coach for the 2008-09 Eurocup season. Pesic, 59, will lead Red Star into the second qualification round, a two-game series played on November 4 and 11 whose winner will reach the regular season. Pesic, who enjoys a long list of coaching success, arrives from Dynamo Moscow, with whom he reached last season's ULEB Cup Final Eight. He is among the few people to have been European club champion as both a player and a coach, having won the Euroleague on court in 1979 with Bosna Sarajevo and on the bench in 2003 with F.C. Barcelona. Much of his club coaching careeer was spent at Alba Berlin, which he led to four consecutive German League titles between 1997 and 2000, as well as the 1995 Korac Cup trophy. He has also coached Bosna, leading it to the Yugoslav League title in 1984 and Akasvayu Girona, with which he won the FIBA EuroCup trophy in 2007. His only other club team, Lottomatica Roma of Italy, reached the 2006 ULEB Cup quarterfinals. Pesic has been just as successful in country competitions. He led Yugoslav national teams to gold at the 1987 World Junior Championship, EuroBasket 2001 and the 2002 World Championships. Moreover, coach Pesic won EuroBasket 1993 with Germany.
