Qualifying Round H, Game 1 preview: ASK Riga - Cajasol
ASK Riga hopes to recall memories of its great past and reach the Eurocup regular season, but will need to get by a tough side in Cajasol in the second qualifying round. The three-time European Cup winners from Latvia knocked off Cholet in the first round, surviving a second leg loss on the road. Head coach Ramunas Butautas has a strong trio of leaders in center Bruno Sundov (16 ppg. 5.5 rpg.), forward Milutin Aleksic (13.5 ppg., 5.5 rpg.) and swingman Ricardo Marsh (11.5 ppg., 6.5 rpg.). Aleksic has also teamed with guard Corey Brewer to lead the attack. Butautas's team struggled from long range against Cholet with just 26% and made only a moderate 69% from the foul line. Brewer has made just 1-of-9 shots from the field and will have to pick up his game if ASK hopes to reach the Eurocup regular season. Second round opponent Cajasol returns to European competition for the first time in eight seasons. Head coach Manel Comas's side has struggled so far in the Spanish League, but showed its ability when it stunned mighty Real Madrid. Guard Andrea Pecile has been the top offensive weapon with 16 points per game, while forward Warren Carter has averaged 14 points and 6.2 rebounds. Forward Michel Ignerski is a third effective scorer. A big key for Comas will be guard Tyrone Ellis, especially since veteran backcourt man Elmer Bennett recently announced his retirement. This promises to be an entertaining and even showdown.
