Last 16 Week 2 MVP: Len Matela, Spirou Basket
One of the trademark teams in Europe's second competition, Spirou Basket of Belgium, is not only one of six unbeaten teams so far in the Eurocup Last 16, but home to the Week 2 MVP. Big man Len Matela led Spirou to a good-as-gold 82-94 road win against Artland Dragons of Germany on Tuesday with a performance index rating of 34, the best of a week when four players from two games posted the top four individual ratings. Matela had 19 points in a near-perfect shooting performance, as he made 4 of 5 two-pointers, his only three-point try and 8 of 8 free throws. He added 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 assists and 6 blocks as Spirou upped its record to 2-0 for sole possession of first place in Group L. Matela was followed by Kelly McCarty of Khimki, who shined despite his team's home loss against Dynamo. McCarty had 27 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals for a 31 index rating. In the same game, Travis Hansen led Dynamo with 24 points on 8-for-12 two-pointers and 5-for-5 free throws. Hansen added 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 6 fouls drawn for a 27 index rating. Darren Fenn of Artland, with a 26 index, and Vladimir Veremeenko of Unics, Todor Gecevski of Zadar, Justin Hamilton of Spirou and Khalid El-Amin of Azovmash, each with a 24 index, completed the top individual performances for the week.
Individual highs: Rok Stipcevic of Zadar, 8 assists
McCarty was the Week 2 top scorer with 27 points against Dynamo Moscow. Hansen is the Last 16 top scorer with 23 points per game. Damir Markota of iurbentia Bilbao Basket and C.J. Wallace of Benetton Basket Tamoil led all rebounders by pulling down 12 apiece this week. Both players (10.5 rpg.) also tie atop the Last 16 overall standings. Rok Stipcevic of Zadar dished 8 assists, more than anyone this week, during his team's home loss against Benetton. Marko Marinovic of Crvena Zvezda is the Last 16 assists leader at 5 per game. Gecevski collected 5 steals to lead the weekly standings. He is also ranks first in steals (3 spg.) in the Last 16. Bostjan Nachbar of Dynamo, Matt Nielsen of Pamesa Valencia and Andreas Glyniadakis of Maroussi each had 3 blocks this week. Serhiy Lishchuk of Azovmash (2.5 bpg.) leads the Last 16 blocks table. Wallace - 11 points, 12 rebounds - and Jorge Garbajosa of Khimki - 15 points, 10 rebounds - were the only players to register double-doubles this week.
