Team Profile: Angelico BiellaAfter reaching the Italian League semifinals for the first time last season, Lauretana Biella is set to make its European competitions debut this year in the Eurocup. The story of modern basketball success in Biella started in 1994, when Biella Basket Club and Amici del Basket Biella merged to become Associazione Sportiva Pallacanestro Biella, which started to compete in the Italian fourth division. By 1999, the team had already made it to the Italian second division and its fans did not have to wait long for the squad to reach even higher. The arrival of head coach Marco Crespi and scoring aces Corey Brewer and Antonio Granger led Fila Biella to promotion to the Italian elite in 2001 through playing fast-paced, fun-to-watch basketball. Players like Kevin Rankin, Mike Batiste, Fabio Di Bella and Cookie Belcher helped Biella keep its name in the Italian League, ranking from 10th to 16th over the next three seasons. Biella, with Angelico as its main sponsor, climbed one step higher by reaching the Italian League playoffs in 2006, losing in the quarterfinals against Climamio Bologna. Biella was sixth at the end of the 2006-07 regular season to earn its second consecutive playoff trip, losing in five thrilling games against Virtus Bologna. Biella did even better last season, upsetting Lottomatica Roma in the quarterfinals to reach the Italian League semifinals for the first time in club history. Riding high after last year’s joyride, Biella now looks to join the big boys and show it is a rising power to stay when it competes in the Eurocup.
