Eurocup Qualifying Round, Game 2 report: Besiktas JK Cola Turka 100-81 WBC Raiffeisen Wels
Besiktas Cola Turka made it to the Eurocup regular season by thrashing Austrian League champion WBC Raiffeisen Wels 100-81 in Game 2 of their two-way Qualifying Round series in Istanbul, Turkey on Tuesday night. Besiktas won the series by aggregate score, as Wels won Game 1 74-69 at home, and earned the right to make it to the Eurocup for the fifth consecutive season. Meanwhile, Wels was relagated to play the FIBA Europe EuroChallenge. Mire Chatman paced the winners with 34 points on 6-of-9 three-pointers, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. Lonny Baxter added 20 points, Cehver Ozer had 13 while Brad Newley got 11 for Besiktas, that made 22 of 29 two-pointers tonight. Jason Conley led Wels with 24 points. Trenton Meacham added 17, Bruce Fields had 12, Matthew Nelson got 11 while Davor Lamesic pulled down 11 boards for the guests. Newley and Chatman combined for 17 points in the first quarter to make Besiktas get a 26-15 margin after 10 minutes. Besiktas boosted its margin to 49-35 at halftime and then again to a game-high 71-48 late in the third quarter. Wels only rallied once the outcome was clear.
Wels tried to slow down the game tempo in the early going to turn the game into a low-scoring battle where it could have more chances to advance. Besiktas followed its game plan, however, playing to play up-tempo through an unstoppable Chatman. Besiktas soon found a go-to guy in Baxter, who helped the hosts to get an early 11-5 lead. Chatman soon allowed Besiktas to get a 21-13 margin and he got some help from Newley - 8 points in the first quarter - to make it a double-digit game, 26-15, after 10 minutes. Wels improved its defense early in the second quarter while Conley and Meacham managed to get the guests within 29-24. Besiktas did not panic, however, as an outstanding Chatman stepped up to lead a 9-1 run that allowed the hosts to break the game open, 38-25, after 17 minutes. Chatman kept pacing Besiktas to make it a 17-point game, 49-32, before Wels got within 49-35 as both teams head back to the locker rooms.
Wels needed a quick comeback to return to the series but Besiktas stayed focused after the break. Baxter, Ozer and the ever-present Chatman allowed the hosts to boost their margin to 56-34 immediately after the break. Wels could not find any open shots while Besiktas kept playing up-tempo, using short possessions and running the break often. Besiktas broke the game open, 71-48, late in the third quarter and kept a solid 21-point lead, 75-54, at the end of this period. Everything was said and done already and Besiktas struggled to play with the same intensity. Wels took advantage of it to trim its deficit, 82-69, early in the fourth quarter. It didn't last long, however, as Chatman returned to the floor to make the difference for Besiktas. Chatman allowed Besiktas to stay out of trouble and reach the 100-point mark at the end of the game, more than enough for all Besiktas fans to enjoy yet another Eurocup season.
