Eurocup Qualifying Round, Game 2 report: Buducnost m:tel 67-65 Brose Baskets
Brose Baskets won the hard-earned prize of moving on to the Eurocup regular season after winning its two-leg qualifying round series by the aggregate score of a single point, despite falling to Buducnost m:tel by the score of 67-65. Buducnost entered the second leg facing a 3-point deficit, but with its home crowd in Montenegro supporting all the way. In the end, it just wasn't enough to overcome the Brose Baskets advantage. Predrag Suput led the winners with 15 points, while Brian Roberts and Casey Jacobsen added 13 and 10, respectively. Nemanja Gordic led all scorers with 19 points and Goran Jerentin chipped in 14 in the losing effort.
Tibor Pleiss got Bamberg on the board first with 2 free throws and a jumper. Gordic responded for Buducnost with 4 quick points of his own. Roberts got 2 free throws to fall for Brose, but Marko Simonovic nailed a jumper to keep the home side close. Five straight points gave Brose a 6-12 lead, but Buducnost fought back with 4 points from the foul line. Jacobsen drained a jumper and Brose led 12-17 after 10 minutes. Brose came out firing in the second quarter with a 10-0 run. Roberts made a jumper followed by a Robert Garret three-pointer. Buducnost tried to stop the run with a timeout, but Brose kept pouring it on and led 12-27 after a triple by John Goldsberry. Buducnost then hit back and in a big way with a 16-0 surge sparked by two three-pointers by Jeretin and reclaimed the lead at 28-27 on a Gordic jumper. Roberts finally scored for Brose with a two-plus-one to send his team into the half ahead 28-30.
Roberts banged home a three to start the third, but Buducnost erupted for 7-0 run capped by a Simonovic triple to grab a 35-33 lead. Brose called for time and Predrag Suput tied the game with a jumper. The teams traded baskets till Eric Taylor hit a three to put Brose up 37-42. Buducnost answered with quick 4 points, but Jacobsen got 3 points off a bucket plus the foul. Moments later Boris Savovic tied it at 45-45 on two free throws. Buducnost got back ahead with 6 straight free throws, and the score was knotted at 47 with 10 minutes to play. Buducnost got up by 4 early in the fourth. Brose scraped back and went ahead on a three-pointer by Suput, but Savovic matched with a three of his own for the 54-53 lead. The score seesawed with neither team able to move ahead by more than 2 points and Brose clinging to its 3-point advantage in the aggregate score. A three-pointer by Goldsberry gave Brose a 62-64 lead with 1:27 to play. Gordic tied it with a jumper and, with 26 seconds on the clock, nailed a triple, 67-64, and tied the aggregate score. Taylor then got fouled and made 1-of-2 from the line to get the victory.
