Game Center, Regular Season, Game 1
Thrills fill opening night all over Europe!
You couldn't ask for much more on the first night of the Eurocup regular season. Record-setters, buzzer-beaters and road wins in bunches made sure that
Week 1
's 16 opening games won't be forgotten soon. In the very first of them,
Unics Kazan
set shooting
records
with an amazing 20 three-pointers, 9 of them by Marko Popovic. Later, as
Galatasaray
rolled to victory, Rado Rancik tied the competition's 40-minute scoring mark with 39 points. In between, there were no less than eight road winners:
Power Electronics Valencia
and
Triumph
in comeback fashion,
Brose Baskets
in a blowout,
Nancy
in a nail-biter,
Aris
in a tough gym, former competition champ
Joventut
, last year's semifinalist
Bilbao
, and storied
Benetton
on a triple at the buzzer by Davor Kus. Home winners had their last-shot victory, too, as Dragan Dojcin let
Alba
escape before a crowd of 11,000 in Berlin to join the celebratory fans of
Crvena Zvezda
,
Hapoel
,
Panellinios
and a pair of competition newcomers,
Spartak
and
Biella
in the win column. And if old friends like Popovic and Rancik dominated the attention with their records, Week 1 also gave the competition some great individual debuts. Samuel Mejia poured in 29 points for Cholet, Devin Smith 25 for Panellinios, Nando De Colo 20 points for Valencia, the same as Bryce Taylor for Broze Baskets and Derrick Low for Siauliai. All in all, it was a great openeing night for the 2009-10 Eurocup, fun but far from easy, as six games were decided by three points or less! Check out the
