Azovmash adds big man Demetrius Alexander
Jan 11, 2010
Azovmash Mariupol has added some power to its frontcourt in time for its must-win Week 6 with Alba Berlin. The Ukrainian champion signed big man Demetrius Alexander to compliment stars Hasan Rizvic and Erik Daniels in the paint. Alexander (204, 34) was one of the top individual performers in the Eurocup regular season last year, averaging 18.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1 block in six games for Barons/LMT Riga. Though his team went 1-5, he was third in index rating and led the competition in rebounds. Azovmash is his third team in the competition – he also played in the ULEB Cup for Snaidero Udine in 2002-03 – and his second in Ukraine after finishing last season with BC Donetsk. Over the course of a long and accomplished career in Europe, Alexander has played in Spain for Cajasol, Valladolid and Fuenlabrada; Italy for Udine; France for Pau-Orthez; Israel for Galil, Haifa and Jerusalem; Latvia for Barons and Ukraine for Donetsk. He began this season in Greece with Kavala and has also played in Australia, South Korea and Japan. Among his recent highlight were winning the 2008 FIBA EuroCup and the 2008 Latvian Championship with Barons.
