Pepu HernandezJust the day after Sito Alonso was dismissed as head coach, DKV Joventut announced on Thursday that Pepu Hernandez, 52, will be the new head coach of the team for the remaining of the season and two more campaigns. A veteran of the Spanish benches, Hernandez reached the peak of his career coaching the Spanish national team in 2006 and 2007, leading the team to the World Championships title in Japan in 2006, and later the Eurobasket silver medal in Spain in 2007. He left the national team in 2008 during the qualifying rounds for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. At club level, Pepu's career has been always tied to one single club, Estudiantes of Madrid. In 1990 he was promoted to assistant coach of the first team, and he held that position until 1994, when he became the head coach. He coached Estudiantes during two stints from 1994 to 2005, and then he moved on to the Spanish national team. With Estudiantes, he won a Spanish King's Cup in 2000 and was also runner-up of the 2003-04 Spanish League and the 1998-99 Korac Cup. He was chosen Coach of the Year in Spain by the Spanish Coaches Association for his work during the 2003-04 season.
