Spartak St. Petersburg signs Popovic
Petar Popovic - DKV Joventut celebration - Final Eight Turin 2008Spartak St. Petersburg turned to former ULEB Cup champion Petar Popovic to give the club a force in the middle. Popovic (211, 30), who won the competition in 2008 with DKV Joventut, arrives from another Spanish side, Asefa Estudiantes, where he averaged 8.1 points per game on 59.9% two-point shooting last season. Popovic and Spartak signed a one-year contract. He began his career at a team by a similar name, Spartak Subotica and has also played for Hemofarm Vrsac and Crvena Zvezda in his native Serbia, Benetton Treviso in Italy and Joventut and Estudiantes in Spain. Popovic averaged 9 pointes per game as a reserve for Joventut during its run to the ULEB Cup title in 2008. In addition to winning the ULEB Cup, Popovic has lifted the 2006 Italian championship with Benetton and the 2005 Adriatic League with Hemofarm. He also represented Serbia & Montenegro at the 2004 Olympic Games.
