Roeland SchaftenaarGran Canaria 2014 improved its frontcourt for the upcoming seasons by inking center Roeland Schaftenaar to a four-year deal, the club announced Monday. Schaftenaar (210, 22) will be sent on loan next season but is expected to return to Gran Canaria in 2011-12. He arrives from Oregon State University, where Schaftenaar averaged 9.2 points and 4 rebounds in 32 NCAA games last season. Schaftenaar has also been a member of the Dutch under-20 and under-18 national teams. "We believe he can be a very interesting player in the long run. He is tall, powerful and can intimidate under the basket," Gran Canaria general director Himar Ojeda said. "He is also able to play outside because he has a good shooting range. Roeland will be sent on loan this season because we want to see how he adapts to the Spanish competition."
