Dynamo Moscow tabs Shabalkin
Jul 20, 2010
One of the best Russian young forwards switched teams on Monday, as Dynamo Moscow announced the arrival of Nikita Shabalkin, who inked a one-year deal with his new club. Shabalkin (204, 23) arrives from Triumph Lyubertsy, where he averaged 8.2 points in 6 games last season, in which he was sidelined most of the way due to an injury. He has arrived to Triumph from BC Khimki, where he reached the 2009 Eurocup Final, losing to Lietuvos Rytas. Shabalkin grew up with Lokomotiv Mineralnye Vody and in 2002 he joined the junior team of CSKA Moscow. He moved to Samara for the 2004-05 season and then went back to CSKA, winning the 2006 Euroleague title in Prague, and back again to Samara until he joined Khimki for the 2007-08 campaign. He is a member of the Russian National Team, winning the 2007 EuroBasket and playing at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, and has also collected domestic titles with CSKA Moscow. "Dynamo has a very ambitious project - last season, the club proved that Russian basketball players can do well at a very high level. I think that their fans loved the club's strategy," Shabalkin said. "I know most players in my new team. I have already talked to coach Bazarevich about next season and my role in the team. I will try to live up to the expectations."
