Team Profile 2010-11: Gran Canaria 2014
Gran CanariaA classic team in the competition, Gran Canaria 2014 will try to get back to the Eurocup through the Qualifying Rounds. Gran Canaria has the experience to reach the regular season and battle to reach higher than ever. Located in the capital of the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, Gran Canaria is the team furthest southwest in the competition and faces long trips every week whether in European competitions or the Spanish League. That has not prevented the team from reaching the Spanish League playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons. Founded in 1963, Gran Canaria competed in the Spanish second division for more than two decades. Even after reaching the top division in 1985, Gran Canaria did not gain a foothold for good in 1995-96. The club reached its first Spanish League playoff in 2000 and played in the Korac Cup in 2001. Gran Canaria finished fifth in the Spanish League in 2003, allowing the team to make its ULEB Cup debut the following season, when it lost against Real Madrid in the eighthfinals. In 2004-05, Gran Canaria did not reach the ULEB Cup elimination rounds, but once again made the Spanish League playoffs. In 2007, Gran Canaria reached the ULEB Cup eighthfinals, losing against FMP, and was one win away from reaching the Spanish League semifinals. Gran Canaria was unable to get past the Eurocup regular season, but once again went back to the Spanish playoffs. Last season, Gran Canaria had its best Eurocup season ever, but a home loss against Panellinios in a do-or-die game prevented the team from reaching the Eurocup Finals. However by returning to the Spanish playoffs, Gran Canaria clinched a Eurocup qualifying round spot. Expect Gran Canaria to battle hard in all competitions as it looks for more success in the 2010-11 season.
