UCAM Murcia announced on Monday that it has replaced head Oscar Quintana with his predecessor, Fotis Katsikaris. Quintana, 49, had previously coached UCAM and re-joined the team last summer, replacing Katsikaris, whose one season on the bench there had led the club to its first-ever qualification for European competition. Katsikaris is a former EuroCup Coach of the Year, having earned the reward while taking Bilbao Basket to the championship game in 2013. Katsikaris started the current season with another EuroCup team, Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar of Russia, one of the Top 16 Group E teams against which UCAM must battle to survive. UCAM will be the fifth EuroCup team that Katsikaris coaches in five seasons in the competition, along with Valencia Basket, Aris Thessaloniki, Bilbao and Lokomotiv. His overall record in the EuroCup is 51-20. He has also coached three seasons in the EuroLeague, for AEK Athens and Bilbao, with a record of 27-27. Katsikaris will be on the bench when UCAM hosts Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas on Wednesday.
Quintana guided UCAM to a 5-6 record in EuroCup play and 5-12 in the Spanish League this season. In an official press release, UCAM thanked Coach Quintana for "his professionalism showed during the time he led the club, wishing him the best of luck in the future". Quintana's assistant Pepe Rodriguez steps in as interim coach. UCAM hosts Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas on Wednesday in Group E action in the EuroCup.
