Valencia's Martinez becomes EuroCup's three-point king

There is a new three-point king in the EuroCup! With his second triple of his team’s playoff game on Tuesday, Rafa Martinez of Valencia Basket overtook the competition’s scoring king, Marko Popovic of Montakit Fuenlabrada, for first place on the all-time list of three-pointers made with 208. The record-setting three came in the second quarter in the opening game of his team’s best-of-three 7DAYS EuroCup Semifinals clash at Fuente de San Luis against Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem. Martinez, 35, did so in his 127thcareer EuroCup appearance, which is the second most in competition history.

A two-time EuroCup champion, Martinez is in his ninth season with Valencia and has competed in the EuroCup in eight of them. He entered the game ranked sixth on the EuroCup scoring charts with 1,145 points and has already climbed two spaces by surpassing teammate Bojan Dubljevic and Chuck Davis. Martinez is also ranked 13th with 248 assists and is ninth in career free throw accuracy (88.4%). He began his career with Basquet Manresa and played there through 2008 with the exception of time spent on loan at CB Vic and CB Valls Felix Hotel. Martinez was a starter on the Valencia squads that won the EuroCup in 2010 and 2014.
