Eurocup Qualifying Round profile: Etha Engomis
Sep 06, 2011
A well-known sports club in Cyprus, Intercollege Etha Engomis faces the challenge of becoming the first Cypriot team to ever reach the Eurocup regular season if it can survive the Qualifying Round. Etha was founded when the best two clubs in the Nicosian suburb of Engomi, Thiella and Anagennisis, merged in 1946. Thiellas was founded in the 1920s and Anagennisis followed in the 1930s. Its football team ceased activities and basketball became the club's main sport. Etha started to play - in both men's and women's competitions - in the Cypriot League after the foundation of its Basketball Association in 1979. Despite being relegated to the second division in 2000, Etha returned to the Cypriot elite in 2001 and used its momentum to improve its results. Etha reached the Cypriot League semifinals in 2002 and made its debut in European competitions in 2004-05, playing the FIBA Europe Cup. Etha made it to the Cypriot League semifinals again in 2010, setting the basis for what was a historic 2010-11 season. Head coach Antonis Constantinides and players like Anthony King, Giorgos Anastasiadis, Valdas Dabkus and Ken Tutt led Etha to win both the Cypriot League and the Cypriot Cup titles. In Europe, Etha upset German powerhouse Artland Dragons in the EuroChallenge qualifying round and registered prestigious wins against APOEL Nicosia and Zadar. Etha will now try to do even better this season, as it will try to defend both titles at home and reach the 2011-12 Eurocup regular season.
