By the end of Week 5, 13 of the tickets to the Last 16 have been taken and some historic clubs have already been shut out, among them a former competiton champion, a former Euroleague champion and one of last season’s Eurocup semifinalists. The tickets from Group A to the Last 16 are gone, but Week 6 will still determine first place in that group. On Tuesday,
BCM Gravelines bested Cibona 81-77
to remain unbeaten. Rudy Jomby scored half the points in a 10-0 fourth-quarter run that secured the Gravelines win. Ludo Vaty paced the winners with 10.
BC Donetsk knocked out Hapoel Jerusalem 68-74
in the Israeli capital. Former Hapoel player Ramel Curry led the winners with 19 points.
BC Khimki topped Cholet Basket 76-70
to stay unbeaten and wrap up first place in Group B. Kresimir Loncar led the victors with 20 points.
VEF Riga downed PAOK 76-81
on the road to earn a Last 16 berth. Kristaps Valters scored 21 and Antanas Kavaliauskas posted a double-double for the Latvian powerhouse. In Group C,
CEZ Nymburk edged Aris 78-72
to march into the Last 16. Tre Simmons paved the way to the win with 22 points.
Rudupis crushed GasTerra Flames 97-70
as Dainius Salenga led a balanced effort with 15 points. Aris hosts Rudupis next week in a winner-takes-all clash for the Last 16.
Valencia scored a 96-88 win over Asvel basket
to clinch a Last 16 berth from Group D. Rafa Martinez and A.J. Ogilvy netted 16 points each for the former champs.
Telenet Oostende trumped Lukoil Academic 77-83
on the road for its first win. Chris Booker netted 18 for Oostende. Asvel hosts Lukoil next week needing to win to advance.
Lokomotiv-Kuban routed Gran Canaria 73-51
on the stretch of Jeremiah Massey and Ali Traore double doubles. At 4-1, Loko tops the group and is into the next stage.
Banvit defeated Fraport Skyliners 56-62
led by Cliff Hammonds’s 15 points. Banvit and Gran Canaria must wait till Week 6 to have their fate decided. On Monday,
Lietuvos Rytas beat Krka Novo Mesto 82-72
to stay unbeaten and lock up first place in Group F, though Krka at 3-2 is also through. Tyrese Rice registered 16 points and 7 assists for the winners. On Tuesday
Le Mans topped Azovmash 75-67
as Taylor Rochestie scored 18. Undefeated
Spartak St. Petersburg eliminated Cedevita 68-73
in Group G. Vladimir Dragicevic scored 16 off the bench for Spartak. And Jeff Adrien led six teammates in double figures with 16 points as
Benetton rocked Bayern Munich 92-66
to wrap up Group G’s other Last 16 spot.
Alba Berlin beat Dexia Mons-Hainaut 83-63
in a game that was closer than the final score would indicate. A 13-0 run to finish the third quarter broke the game open. DaShaun Wood posted 16 points and 9 assists for the winning side.
Buducnost Voli edged PGE Turow 73-78
to join Berlin as the Group H representatives in the Last 16. Bojan Dubljevic and Jermaine Anderson paced the Montenegrin champs with 16 points each. With three Last 16 spots still up for grabs and first place in five groups not yet decided, don’t miss the regular seasons finales next week!
