Last 16 groups breakdown, Group K
Anything can happen in Group K, as all four teams have the talent and experience to beat anyone, anywhere. Spartak St. Petersburg is still undefeated, has allowed just 66.8 points per game and hopes to set the basis to reach an European club competition final for the first time since the mid-1970s. Banvit comes off back-to-back unquestionable home wins to win regular season Group E. A nice core of players that has been together for 3 years, a couple of key additions and an outstanding basketball atmosphere in all home games are the main reasons that allowed Banvit to get to the Last 16 and keep fighting for Eurocup glory. Krka Novo Mesto did not find much trouble to reach the Last 16, overcoming roster changes to go past the regular season. Krka reached the first ULEB Cup finals back in the 2002-03 season and is back after nine years ready to keep making noise Buducnost is in its sixth Eurocup season and has a nice mix of youth talent and experience that could pay off right away.
BANVIT BK
won Group E, is undefeated at home and on a three-game winning streak.
THE STAR
KENAN BAJRAMOVIC
Just as expected, Kenan Bajramovic has delivered right away, offering his many intangibles to Banvit BK. Bajramovic leads the team in rebounding (5.2 rpg.) and is one of its scoring leaders with excellent shot selection (11.2 ppg., 65.2% 2FG, 40% 3FG) - all in just 22 minutes per game.
KEEP AN EYE ON...
BARIS ERMIS
One of Banvit's main references at both ends is point guard Baris Ermis, who leads the team in minutes (almost 29 per game), assists (4.2 apg.) and steals (1.8 spg.). About to turn 27, Ermis has entered the prime of his career and hopes to lead Banvit past the Last 16.
THE FACT
It is not easy to see a core of US players together in the same team for several seasons but Banvit has managed to do so. Chuck Davis, Lance Williams and Keith Simmons have been in Banvit for the last three seasons. Williams even arrived earlier, in the 2008-09 season.
SPARTAK ST. PETERSBURG
won Group G, is one of the three undefeated teams left in the competition.
THE STAR
YOTAM HALPERIN
Seen as a score-first guard earlier in this career, Yotam Halperin has become an all-around player in recent years. His Eurocup numbers (8.8 ppg., 41.2% 3FG, 3.2 rpg., 5.5 apg.) show that Halperin is sharing the ball, scoring with great accuracy and helping Spartak in many ways.
KEEP AN EYE ON...
PATRICK BEVERLEY
Athletic and determined, Patrick Beverley is in his fourth season in Europe at age 23. Beverley is Spartak's floor general, a smart playmaker that is all over the place on defense. Beverley's stats line (10.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg., 3.8 apg., 2 spg.) says it all about his impact in Spartak's game.
THE FACT
This is Jure Zdovc's second Eurocup season, as he worked for KK Bosna in 2007-08. Zdovc has one of the coaches present at the longest Eurocup game ever, in which Alba beat Bosna 141-127 after 5 overtimes. Lance Williams, now with Banvit, was also present in that game.
KRKA NOVO MESTO
was second in Group F with a 4-2 record, needed just 4 games to qualify.
THE STAR
SMILJAN PAVIC
At age 31, Smiljan Pavic is showing everyone why he is one of most underrated centers in continental basketball. Pavic averages 11 points and 5.7 rebounds in less than 20 minutes per game. With extended playing time from now on, Pavic should do even better in the Last 16.
KEEP AN EYE ON...
ZORAN DRAGIC
Highly effective and intense, Zoran Dragic is a slasher that makes the most out of his quickness and high basketball IQ at small forward. Dragic's numbers (10.8 ppg., 4.3 rpg.), however, do not show his impact on Krka's game. He will be ready to deliver right after the holiday break.
THE FACT
Krka played the original ULEB Cup finals in 2002-03, losing against Pamesa Valencia in a two-way series. Jure Balazic is the only player in Krka that took part in that series. Smiljan Pavic played for Pivovarna Lasko against Krka that season, losing against them in the eighthfinals.
KK BUDUCNOST VOLI
was second in Group H with a 3-3 record. A road win against Turow allowed Buducnost to advance.
THE STAR
BOJAN DUBLJEVIC
At age 20, Bojan Dubljevic has simply taken over and is Buducnost's main reference on offense. Dubljevic (10 ppg., 62.5% 2FG, 3.2 rpg.) is seeing as a star in the making and has drawn attention for some of the best clubs in Europe, that will now have the chance to see him play in the Last 16.
KEEP AN EYE ON...
CEDOMIR VITKOVAC
An experienced, versatile forward, Cedomir Vitkovac leads Buducnost in scoring (13.2 ppg.) and rebounding (4.2 rpg.). He ranks third among all Last 16 players in fouls drawn (5.2 fdpg.). With a new rotation expected, Vitkovac will stay as one of Buducnost's main pillar at both ends.
THE FACT
Bojan Krstovic needs just 3 games to record his 100th Eurocup appearance. He would be the first player to reach 100 games in the competition. The next active player in this year's Last 16 is Matt Nielsen of BC Khimki, who stepped on a Eurocup court 60 times until now.
