Last 16, Game 1 MVP: Patrick Beverley, Spartak SPB
Patrick Beverley - Spartak St. Petersburg (photo Spartak SPB)The best Eurocup game yet for blossoming guard Patrick Beverley has garnered the Spartak St. Petersburg star attention throughout the continent as he has earned Last 16, Game 1 MVP honors. Beverley set season highs with 25 points and a performance index ranting of 27 to lead Spartak to a 57-65 road win at Buducnost Voli. Only 23 years old and already with a Euroleague Final Four appearance under his belt, Beverley showed his talent in Tuesday’s win in Podgorica by having a hand in more than half his team’s points between those he scored and the 4 assists he dished. Beverley added 3 rebounds, a steal and 5 fouls drawn to reach his index rating of 27. The second best individual performance of the week came from Asvel Basket center Hilton Armstrong, who was nearly unstoppable with 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting plus 5 rebounds in compiling an index of 26. Nevertheless, his performance was not enough for Asvel, which lost 75-86 at home to Donetsk. VEF Riga center Antanas Kavaliauskas tallied 19 points and 8 rebounds in his team’s defeat to CEZ Nymburk. Kavaliauskas finished with a 25 index, which was third among all players in the first week of Last 16 action. Rounding out the week’s best showings were Ramel Curry of Donetsk and Petr Benda of Nymburk, each with 24. Curry had 18 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals, while Benda went for 24 points.

Individual highs: Nik Caner-Medley, Valencia – 14 rebounds

Beverley was also the week’s No. 1 scorer with his 25 point output. The best rebounder of the week was Nik Caner-Medley of Valencia Basket with 14 in a 63-69 road win at BCM Gravelines. No one dished more assists this week than Banvit BK playmaker Baris Ermis, who set up 8 baskets in his team’s 77-65 win over Krka Novo Mesto. Ermis is now tied for fifth place this season with 4.7 assists per game. Kyle Weaver topped the week’s steals leaders with 5 in Alba Berlin’s 72-64 loss at Benetton Basket. Two players –Sam Muldrow of Aris BSA 2003 and Ali Traore of Lokomotiv-Kuban – rejected 3 shots to lead all Last 16, Game 1 players. Muldrow, who has averaged 3 rejections per game all season, leads the Eurocup in that category.
