Valencia fires head coach Olmos

Valencia Basket will continue its try for a third Eurocup title this season without the coach with whom it won the first, Paco Olmos, after he was released by the club Sunday. Olmos, 41, will be replaced on a temporary basis by assistant coach Chechu Mulero. Valencia had a 4-2 record in the Eurocup regular season and won its first Last 16 game on the road Tuesday against Gravelines-Dunkerque in France. In the Spanish League, however, the team has an 8-9 record and missed qualifying for the King's Cup with a road loss this weekend. Olmos grew up with Valencia Basket, coaching youth teams before leaving town for various head coaching jobs in the Spanish second division. He returned to take over the Valencia bench in 2002, quickly becoming the first champion of the new Eurocup (then called ULEB Cup), in 2003, and reaching the Spanish League finals later that spring. After leaving Valencia, he spent several seasons again in the Spanish second division before rejoining the team this year. In its statement, Valencia said it that Mulero would lead the team during a search for a permanent head coach.
