2011-12 Eurocup MVP: Patrick Beverley, Spartak St. Petersburg
April 6, 2012
Euroleague Basketball is pleased to announce that Patrick Beverley of Spartak St. Petersburg has been selected as the Eurocup MVP for the 2011-12 season. Beverley, 23, has dominated throughout the season to lead his team to the best record and a spot in the Eurocup Finals. He has seemingly done it all for Spartak, leading the team in scoring, steals and performance index rating and placing second in rebounds, assists and three-pointers made for a team that led the competition in defense and a lost only one game. In fact, his 2 steals per game led the Eurocup, he was tied for second in index rating and at just 1.85 meters, Beverley was the shortest player in the competition to average more than 4 rebounds per game. Though Beverley is one of many big names on the Spartak roster – three different Spartak players earned weekly MVP honors this season – his ability to contribute in many ways ensured that Beverley had an impact in every game. His overall excellence and consistency for such an elite team made Beverley an ideal choice as Eurocup MVP.
The Eurocup MVP is part of an awards structure that recognizes the finest Eurocup players for their efforts on the basketball court throughout the season. Beverley's selection was made by a panel of Euroleague Basketball's in-house experts based on his and his team's performance during the Eurocup regular season, Last 16 and quarterfinals rounds. Statistics and performance index ratings were taken into consideration for the award, but did not alone determine the winner. Beverley joins 2011 MVP Dontaye Draper of Cedevita Zagreb, 2010 MVP Chuck Eidson of Lietuvos Rytas and 2009 MVP Marko Banic of Bizkaia Bilbao Basket on a select list of Eurocup stars to win the award.
Even before opening night Beverley was proving himself to be Spartak’s go-to guy. He netted 26 points in the return leg of the Eurocup Qualifying Round series against ETHA Engomi to lead Spartak into the competition. Then Beverley went for 21 in a 73-56 rout of last season’s third-placed team, Cedevita, in Week 1. Even when his shot wasn’t falling, Beverley found ways to contribute, like in regular season Week 6 when he had 10 assists and 8 rebounds plus 4 points in a 97-77 victory over Benetton Basket. Beverley started the Last 16 in style with 25 points and 4 assists in a 57-65 win at KK Buducnost Voli for which he snagged weekly MVP honors. Beverley went for 19 points on 9-of-10 free throw shooting in a 70-64 win over Buducnost in Last 16 Week 5 to clinch first place in Group K. In the quarterfinals, it was again Beverley that set the tone for success with 19 points, 3 assists and 3 steals in a 64-68 victory at CEZ Nymburk that set the stage for a home win one week later to send Spartak to Khimki. In all he averaged a 16.9 performance index rating, 12.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2 steals over 30 minutes in 14 games for Spartak.
Beverley joins a list of 2011-12 award winners that includes the best players and coaches in the Eurocup this season. Jonas Valanciunas of Lietuvos Rytas was selected as the 2011-12 Eurocup Rising Star Trophy winner. Beverley’s coach, Jure Zdovc, was named Eurocup Coach of the Year. Beverley also highlighted the All-Eurocup First Team alongside fellow stars Zoran Planinic of BC Khimki, Nik Caner-Medley of Valencia Basket and Valanciunas and Ronnie Seibutis of Rytas. The All-Eurocup second team features Beverley’s backcourt mate at Spartak, Yotam Halperin, as well as Ramel Curry of BC Donetsk, Pavel Pumprla of CEZ Nymburk, Jeremiah Massey of Lokomotiv Kuban and Bojan Dubljevic of Buducnost. The last of the awards, the Eurocup Finals MVP trophy, will go to the best player at that event as voted by accredited journalists in attendance during the title game.
