Ukrainian Cup Final: February 10, 2008
Azovmash Mariupol is the Ukrainian Cup champion! Azovmash lifted its third Ukrainian Cup trophy by downing archrivals BC Kyiv 73-63 in the title game in Sumy on Sunday. For the first time ever, both Men's and Women's Ukrainian Cup finals were played in the same venue in a final four format. Gerrod Henderson led the winners with 18 points. Robert Archibald and Rodney Buford each added 14, Yahor Meshcharakou had 12 while Sergiy Lishchuk grabbed 12 rebounds for Azovmash, whose new coach Memi Becirovic could not have a better start. Artur Drozdov had 26 points for Kyiv while Josh Davis added 11. Three-pointer by Buford and Meshcharakou gave Azovmash a 14-9 lead early in the game. Marcus Faison, Drozdov and a triple by Davis brought Kyiv as close as 17-16 after 10 minutes. Archibald followed a basket with a triple, igniting a game-breaking 18-0 run in which Henderson allowed his team to break the game open, 38-18, late in the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers by Drozdov got Kyiv within 41-28 at halftime. Panos Liadelis and Henderson paced Azovmash after the break while another three-pointer by Meshcharakou gave his team a 56-41 margin after 30 minutes. Archibald sealed the outcome, 67-46, with 8 minutes to go, as Kyiv did not recover and allowed all Azovmash fans to celebrate yet another Ukrainian Cup title!
