MACCABI ELECTRA brings back Tal Burstein
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv made its first player signing under new-old coach David Blatt market by bringing back a familiar face, Tal Burstein, after one year of separation. Burstein (198, 30) signed a three years deal with Maccabi that will keeping him with the Israeli powerhouse until 2013, to complete more than 10 years with the club. He first arrived at Maccabi from Bnei Herzelia at age 20, just before the start of the 2000-01 season. He quickly became a key player and helped Maccabi win the FIBA SuproLeague title that season. Burstein was a steady starter for the next five seasons, during which the team won back-to-back Euroleague titles in 2004 and 2005, made it to title game in 2006, reached the Final Four in 2002 and won five consecutive Israeli League titles. Burstein suffered severe injuries and was frequently sidelined after that, even though he returned in time for the 2008 Final Four in Madrid, Spain. After nine consecutive seasons with the club, he left Maccabi before the start of the 2009-10 season to play for Spanish side Ayuda en Accion Fuenlabrada. He averaged 9.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in 30 Spanish League games with Fuenlabrada. Burstein has had 995 points, 98 three-pointers and 395 rebounds in 140 Euroleague games with Maccabi.
"I'm very happy and proud to return home," Burstein said. "It'll be a pleasure to work together again with Derrick Sharp and David Blatt. I'm confident Coach Blatt will build a great team, balanced and smart like he knows. I had a fascinating season in Spain, but nothing can match going back to Israel, Maccabi and Nokia Arena. I hope to finish my career here."
"I'm very happy. It's one of the first things I wanted to do upon my return to the club," Blatt said. "I personally love Tal very much, both as a player and a very important character in Maccabi."
