OLYMPIACOS: Spanoulis crosses over
Olympiacos made a blockbuster signing as its first move since hiring Dusan Ivkovic as head coach, bringing in one of the top guards in Europe, Vassilis Spanoulis, on a three-year deal. Spanoulis (193, 27) arrives from the Reds' archrival Panathinaikos, where he spent the last three seasons and four years overall. He was the Euroleague Basketball Final Four MVP in 2009 when he led the Greens past Olympiacos with 18 points in the semifinals before contributing 13 against CSKA in the title game in Berlin. Last season Spanoulis averaged 10.3 points and 3.6 assists in 14 Euroleague games. In addition to winning the Euroleague, he totaled four Greek championships and three Greek Cups during his time with Panathinaikos and was also selected to the 2005-06 and 2008-09 All-Euroleague Second Teams. Spanoulis boats an impressive haul with the Greek national team too. He won a gold medal at EuroBasket 2005, a silver medal at the 2006 World Championships and a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2009. Spanoulis began his career with Larissa and later played four seasons for Maroussi, reaching both the Greek League finals and the FIBA Europe League title game in 2004. After one successful season with the Greens, he spent the 2006-07 campaign in the NBA with Houston before returning home to Greece.
