SPIROU gets bigger with Santiago at center
Spirou Basket Charleroi added a major presence to its frontcourt Tuesday with the signing of Daniel Santiago. The veteran center will mark his sixth consecutive season in the Euroleague this season. Santiago (217, 34) averaged 5.7 points and 2.5 rebounds in 15 Euroleague games for Efes Pilsen last season. Charleroi will be his fourth Euroleague team in the last four seasons. He joined Unicaja in 2005 and played there for three seasons before moving to Barcelona for one year and then Efes last season. He helped Barcelona win the 2009 Spanish League and Unicaja reach its first-ever Final Four and win its first Spanish League crown. Santiago was named the Euroleague's MVP for March in the 2006-07 season. He is also a veteran of the Puerto Rican national team, for whom he played this past summer at the FIBA World Championships. Santiago has helped Puerto Rico to a silver medal at the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship and a pair of gold medals at the 2001 and 2003 Central American Championships. Santiago began his career playing college basketball at the University of New Mexico and St. Vincent College and has also played professionally in Puerto Rico for Vaqueros de Bayamon, in Italy for Pallacanestro Varese and Virtus Roma and in the NBA for Phoenix and Milwaukee.
