CAJA LABORAL bulks up with Batista at center
Caja Laboral fortified its frontline with the signing of center Esteban Batista for this season and three more. Batista (208, 27) arrives from fellow Spanish League side Fuenlabrada, where he was one of the top performers this season. He ranked second in the Spanish League in performance index rating with 18.9 per game and in rebounds with 8.4 per game in addition to 12.9 points per evening. Batista will begin his second stint in the Euroleague after playing for Maccabi Tel Aviv for the 2007-08 season and the start of the following season. Batista helped Maccabi Tel Aviv reach the 2008 Euroleague title game in Madrid with 10.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game as a reserve. He ranked fourth in the Euroleague in index rating per minute that season with an impressive 0.67 average, and shined in the title game when he tallied 14 points and 7 rebounds in 14 minutes. A native of Uruguay, Batista came to Spain as a teenager and signed for Real Madrid, but never suited up for the Whites and instead played on loan with smaller clubs. He later spent two seasons with Atlanta in the NBA, averaging 1.7 points and 1.5 rebounds in 70 games. After playing for Maccabi, Batista also spent time in Russia with Triumph Lyubertsy before joining Fuenlabrada last season. Batista is a regular with the Uruguayan national team, with whom he has earned two silver and two bronze medals at the South American Championships.
