Slovenian League finals, Game 5: June 9, 2010
Krka Novo Mesto won the Slovenian League championship on Wednesday for the first time in seven years. Veteran Davor Marcelic scored 24 points and Smiljan Pavic posted 14 points, 17 rebounds and 4 blocked shots as Krka beat Union Olimpija 79-87 at Hala Tivoli in the Slovenian capital to wrest the title away in the fifth game of the best-of-five finals. Pavic, who averaged 12.7 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists in Krka's three wins in the series, was named finals MVP. Goran Ikonic nailed a pair of three-pointers and Pavic added a pair of tip-ins in a 2-14 first-quarter run that gave Krka the lead for good. The visitors finished the first quarter ahead 13-20, increased the lead to 25-45 at halftime and saw it peak at 23 early in the second quarter. Olimpija rallied in the closing minutes, but never seriously threatened Krka, which celebrated its third Slovenian League crown. Ikonic finished with 14 points and Simon Petrov added 13 for the new champs. Saso Ozbolt led Olimpija with 22 points, Jure Lalic added 16, Jaka Klobucar 14 and Edin Bavcic scored 12 in defeat.

Slovenian League, Season 2009-10
The Slovenian League returns with the same format as past seasons with a dozen teams set to compete in a 22-game regular season and the top seven advancing to a second phase, where defending champion Union Olimpija joins the fray. Olimpija remains the team to beat in Slovenia and it promises to be even stronger this year with the likes of Sani Becirovic, Uros Slokar, Matt Walsh and Gasper Vidmar joining Vlado Ilievski, Vladimir Golubovic and Saso Ozbolt. Its main rival is Helios Domzale, which brings back Alvin Snow, Alexei Lashkevich, Domen Zerak and Ziga Zagorc and added Mario Dundovic. Among the other contenders to challenge Olimpija in the playoffs are Elektra Esotech, Krka Novo Mesto, Geoplin Slovan and Zlatorog Lasko. Elektra brought in Tadej Kostomaj to team with returnees Dejan Cup and Tadej Horvat. Krka returns the core of last season’s team with Simon Petrov, Davor Marcelic, Jure Balazic and Bojan Krivec. Geoplin Slovan lost its top three scorers from last season, but kept Zoran Dragic and Dejan Cigoja and added Ernest Novak and Luka Marolt. And Zlatorog looks to leader Nejc Strnad and Miljan Goljovic to turn some heads. Hopsi Polzela could also make a challenge if last season’s star, Shawn King, makes a successful return from a knee injury. Ultimately, they will all be targeting Olimpija for the Slovenian crown.
