CSKA survives Partizan in OT, finishes third
CSKA Moscow finished the 2010 Euroleague Basketball season in third place after holding off Partizan Belgrade 90-88 in a memorable overtime thriller on Sunday at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in the French capital. CSKA was led by its old guard as Trajan Langdon produced a record scoring night and J.R. Holden sank a game-winning three-pointer with 2.4 seconds left in overtime to secure a tough win. Langdon finished with 32 points – setting a club record for points in a Final Four game and ranking seventh all-time. He also climbed to third place on the career Final Four scoring table with 172.
Always a solid pro and strong contributor to the CSKA Moscow dynasty, Viktor Khryapa has risen to superstar status this season as an all-around threat rarely seen at such a high level of competition. Khryapa led the league in steals and defensive rebounds.
With a burst of continuous success over the last half-decade, Ramunas Siskauskas of CSKA has left no doubt about his status as one of the best small forwards in basketball. In Paris, he plans to add to his growing legend by grabbing his third Euroleague crown in four years.
With a record eight consecutive qualifications, CSKA Moscow has made the Final Four its second home. This season's journey was unlike previous ones, however. A first-time Euroleague head coach, a major injury and young players in key roles did not stop CSKA from projecting as much strength as ever.
Thanks to a model resurgence since the turn of the century, CSKA is living a second golden era. With two more Euroleague titles this decade, CSKA now boasts six total, ranking it second and taking the club's impact beyond sport to become a symbol of Russian pride.
In just his second Euroleague season, Sasha Kaun has become key young pilar in a CSKA Moscow lineup that otherwise relies heavily on its veterans. Kaun enjoyed his main learning period as a rookie season, which he finished filling a key reserve role in the 2009 Final Four.
No one can have quite as wide a perspective on the Final Four as does CSKA Moscow head coach Evgeny Pashutin. He has made the continent's marquee event as a player, a brother, an assistant coach and, now, in his rookie Euroleague season on the bench.
"Hello, Euroleague.net readers! This is Andrey Vorontsevich of CSKA Moscow and this is my first blog on the site! I assume that not everyone knows me in Europe, so I better introduce myself a little bit. I started playing basketball at age 7."
If there is a team that has proven non-believers wrong this season, that has to be Euroleague powerhouse CSKA Moscow, which has risen above a raft of changes to make its eighth consecutive Final Four.
Viktor Khryapa, March MVP
As a fresh-faced talent in his first Euroleague season, Viktor Khryapa started for the CSKA Moscow team that reached the 2003 Final Four, its first in several years. Eight seasons later, Khryapa is playing a big and unusual role - that of passing power forward.
He has accomplished so much already, it is hard to believe that Ramunas Siskauskas of CSKA Moscow has only played five full seasons in the Euroleague. He has been champion twice, in consecutive seasons with different teams.
CSKA wins Game 4 for eighth straight Final Four!
With another show of its legendary pride, CSKA Moscow stormed back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat host Caja Laboral 70-74 on Thursday and blast into the club's eighth consecutive Final Four! CSKA will now face Regal FC Barcelona in one semifinal on May 7 at the Final Four in Paris!
