The head coach: Saso Filipovski
|
At just 33 years old, Saso Filipovski of PGE Turow Zgorzelec can already boast accomplishments to which coaches way beyond his years continue to aspire. Already having been the youngest coach to head a Euroleague bench all decade, Filipovski has now launched unheralded Turow, a newcomer to international competition, on a meteoric rise. Filipovski paid his dues as a long-time apprentice in his native Slovenia's most storied club, Union Olimpija of Ljubljana. As an assistant coach, he helped Olimpija to win an Adriatic League, three Slovenian Leagues and five consecutive Slovenian Cup titles between 1999 and 2003. Then, in his head coaching debut at age 29, Filipovski took Olimpija to the Euroleague Top 16 before adding two more Slovenian League crowns to the trophy case. In the summer of 2006, Filipovski moved to Turow and proceeded to lift the club to new heights by making last season's Polish League playoff finals. Filipovski is doing even better this season, having steered Turow against all odds to a regular season group title and through two elimination rounds to become a surprise guest at the ULEB Cup Final Eight in Turin!
