The star: Robertas Javtokas
|
The protagonist in one of the most amazing recovery stories in sports, big man Robertas Javtokas has played a huge role in bringing Dynamo Moscow to the Final Eight in hopes of adding a new trophy to the club's 2006 copy. Javtokas wasn't with Dynamo for that first triumph, but he is also trying for his second ULEB Cup trophy, and if it comes with another MVP award like he got when Lietuvos Rytas won in 2005, don't be surprised. As his Euroleague title with Panathinaikos last season also attests, Javtokas likes making the most of every opportunity. His success is truly amazing considering that Javtokas, now 28, was nearly killed in a motorcycle accident in his native Lithuania six years ago. A list of broken bones and injuries led doctors to wonder if he would live or walk again, but Javtokas recovered in time to join Lithuania at the 2004 Olympics. He has been enjoying plenty of success ever since, in great measure because his defensive prowess, rebounding and shot-blocking help any team compete at the highest playoff levels, making Javtokas and Dynamo a dangerous duo in Turin.
