The current Eurocup champion and the Euroleague's newest team for 2009-10, Lietuvos Rytas of Lithuania, continued adding frontcourt strength by signing center Aron Baynes of Australia over the weekend. Baynes (208, 22) is coming off four years at Washington State University in the United States, where he averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in 33 games last season. He was a part-time starter his first two years at Washington State and went fulltime the last two. Baynes is considered a back-to-the-basket specialist known for rebounding and toughness. He becomes the second Australian to play for Lietuvos Rytas, after Matt Nelson. Baynes has recently been named a candidate to represent Australia in the 2009 FIBA Oceania Championships, which will be held in August. Prior to his university career, Baynes was trained at the Australian Institute of Sport in 2004 and 2004. He had led the Cairns Marlins, in his hometown, to the semipro national championship in 2004.
