Top 16 Week 5 in review
Regal Barcelona punched its ticket through to the Quarterfinal Playoffs by routing Maroussi 58-85. The league’s best defense was on display as it held the home team to just 3 points in the entire third quarter. Barca hosts Partizan Belgrade next week looking to win the group and home-court advantage in the quarterfinals. Erazem Lorbek paced Barcelona with 14 points and Juan Carlos Navarro scored 13 including a pair of three-pointers to stretch his streak of games with a triple made to a dozen.
Panathinaikos registered its first win in the Top 16 by downing Partizan 66-82 in front of a full house of disappointed fans at Pionir Arena. The loss denied Partizan the opportunity to advance to the playoffs this week, but the Serbian champs cans till get there by winning next week in Barcelona or if Partizan does the work for them by beating Maroussi in Athens. Drew Nicholas led the winners with 22 points on incredible 6-of-6 three-point shooting. The point total was his best ever for the Greens and the most he’s had in any Euroleague game since scoring 29 for Efes Pilsen against Panathinaikos more than two years ago.
Maccabi Electra advanced to the Quarterfinal Playoffs by pulling away to dump Montepaschi Siena 97-82 and then waiting for Real Madrid to beat Efes Pilsen. Maccabi outscored Montepaschi 18-4 over the final three minutes to record the win. The Israeli champs scored a Euroleague record 43 points in the fourth quarter as they took the win. The previous record for points in a quarter was 41, set by Real Madrid in 2000 and matched by Zalgiris last season. Alan Anderson, who was awarded his Sportingbet MVP of the Month for February by team president Shimon Mizrahi before tipoff, shined again, leading six Maccabi scorers in double figures with 24 points.
Real Madrid edged Efes Pilsen 75-77 to seal its passage through to the Top 16 and bring Maccabi with it. Now Madrid will host Maccabi next week with first place in Group F on the line. It was a special night for Jorge Garbajosa, who led the winners with 16 points and 11 rebounds, recording his first Euroleague double-double in nearly four years. His last double-double was a 22-point, 11-rebound effort for Unicaja in a road win at Zalgiris on March 9, 2006. Moreover, Garbajosa cracked the Euroleague career top 10 in rebounding, overtaking Marcus Goree. The Madrid power forward has 736 rebounds for his career.
CSKA Moscow became the first team to win its Top 16 group after downing Unicaja 70-76. The Russian champs got solid performances from their top players, including Ramunas Siskauskas who scored 16 points, while Andrei Vorontsevich came off the bench for 13 points in 16 minutes. Viktor Khryapa shined with 11 points, 8 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks, moving into a tie with former Zalgiris center Grugorii Khizniak for 10th place on the Euroleague career shot-blocking list with 83. Omar Cook led Unicaja with 17 points. CSKA took over early, with Siskauskas hitting three times from downtown in a 0-15 run to take a 10-24 lead after 10 minutes. The lead reached 10-29 early in the second quarter and CSKA never held off a late Unicaja rally to earn the victory.
Zalgiris Kaunas did all it could to remain alive in the race for the quarterfinals by beating Asseco Prokom Gdynia 93-88, but its efforts were made moot when CSKA won later in the day, giving Prokom the last playoff berth from Group G. Marcus Brown rallied the hosts with 15 of his 23 points in a second-quarter takeover run. Prokom rallied from 19 points down in the second half to tie the score at 73-73 with six minutes left, but Brown returned for a huge triple that guided his team to victory. Brown led six scorers in double figures, including center Mirza Begic, who extended his streak of games with at least 1 blocked shot to seven. David Logan led Prokom with 22 points.
Olympiacos clinched first place in Group H by dominating Caja Laboral 102-85 for its 10th straight win and 13th in a row at Peace and Friendship Stadium. For Laboral, the result set up a do-or-die showdown at home against Cibona next week. Sofoklis Schortsanitis teamed with Linas Kleiza and Josh Childress in a 15-0 third-quarter charge that broke the game open and another 14-0 push bridging the third and fourth quarter turned the closing minutes into a blowout. Childress paced the Reds with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Schortsanitis added 19 points in 18 minutes and Kleiza scored 17. Mirza Teletovic led Laboral with 25 points.
Cibona recorded its first win in Group H by thrashing BC Khimki Moscow Region 82-63. The result also gives Cibona a fighting chance to reach the quarterfinals if it can beat Caja Laboral next week in Vitoria, Spain. Khimki needs to beat Olympiacos next week to keep its chances alive. Jamont Gordon paced the winners with 23 points and 8 rebounds and now leads the Top 16 with 21.4 points per game. Bojan Bogdanovic added a Euroleague career-high 22 points on 6-of-6 three-point shooting plus 9 rebounds. Keith Langford had 16 points for Khimki. Gordon, Bogdanovic and Marko Tomas fueled a 17-0 run that put Cibona ahead for good, 52-35, right after the break.
