Maccabi brings Eliyahu home for 5 years
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv announced Tuesday that favorite son Lior Eliyahu is returning to wear blue and yellow for the next five seasons. Eliyahu (206, 25) arrives from Caja Laboral, with whom he won the Spanish League last season. Before that he played three seasons with Maccabi. Eliyahu is the final addition to a rebuilt Maccabi frontline that includes Richard Hendrix, Elishay Kadir, Sofoklis Schotsanitis, Jeff Foote, David Bluthenthal and Yaniv Green. Eliyahu first arrived at Maccabi for the 2006-07 season after playing for Hapoel Galil Elyon and soon established himself as one of the club’s leading players. During the 2008-09 season, he was selected as the Euroleague MVP of December after posting his career high in index rating with 42 in leading Maccabi to a home win over Cibona Zagreb with 24 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists. He averaged 14 points and 6.6 rebounds per Euroleague game in his last season with Maccabi. Last season in Vitoria, Eliyahu averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds in the Euroleague. A key member of the Israeli national team, Eliyahu produced 13.9 points and 5.9 rebounds in helping Israel qualify for EuroBasket 2011 this summer.
