Reigning Spanish League champion FC Barcelona Regal faces the 2011-12 Turkish Airlines Euroleague season as a top candidate to lift the trophy in May. Former Alexander Gomelskiy Coach of the Year trophy winner Xavi Pascual keeps leading Barcelona and superstar and five-time All-Euroleague guard Juan Carlos Navarro is set to keep leading the team. Barcelona extended center Erazem Lorbek and small forward Pete Mickeal, as well as adding do-it-all swingman Chuck Eidson to improve its perimeter options. Expect Barcelona to get even better and be ready to challenge for its third Euroleague title.
On the heels of perhaps its greatest season ever, Montepaschi Siena heads into the 2011-12 Turkish Airlines Euroleague looking for more. Last season Siena reached the Euroleague Final Four and won the Italian League and Cup double all after undergoing significant roster changes. Now head coach Simone Pianigiani comes back with the core of that team, including star point guard Bo McCalebb who signed a multi-year extension, and the new additions of former champ David Anderson and promising rookie DaJuan Summers to provide power inside as the pride of Siena shoots for Euroleague glory once more.
Eurocup champion Unics Kazan is sure to be highly motivated as it enters the Turkish Airlines Euroleague for the very first time. Head coach Evgeny Pashutin, who led a team to the Euroleague Final Four just two years ago, has a fairly experienced team for a club making its debut in Europe’s premier competition. In addition to some of last year’s stars, like Terrell Lyday and Vladimir Veremeenko, returning, former Euroleague champ Aleksey Savrasenko forward Mike Wilkinson and center Nathan Jawai joined and promising point guard Marcus Williams will run the show for a team on the rise.
Perennial Polish League king Asseco Prokom Gdynia checks in for its eighth consecutive season in Europe’s premier basketball competition with a rich tradition and confident group of players hoping to meet – or surpass – the run made to the Turkish Airlines playoffs two seasons ago. Although the Prokom roster will likely still be added to, the team has retained the bulk of its local core. Three players that started in the Euroleague last season – center Adam Lapeta and swingmen Piotr Szczotka and Mateusz Kostrzewski – are among the role players that could be difference makers as Prokom targets another big year.
Fresh off its best Turkish Airlines Euroleague season in many years, Union Olimpija hopes to keep its momentum going and turn each home game at Stozice Arena into a one-of-a-kind experience. Olimpija inked Saso Filipovski as its new head coach and still needs to complete its roster, but the Slovenian powerhouse will be ready to fight and compete by mid-October. Veteran forward and last season's October MVP Goran Jagodnik, three-point specialist Sasu Salin or up-and-coming prospect Davis Bertans are already under contract, but expect Olimpija to be its usual self - competitive, proud and backed by a wild crowd.
POST-DRAW REACTIONS
FC Barcelona Regal sports director Joan Creus:
"This is a tough group for us, like every year in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, of course. It does not surprise anybody. The fact of having Montepaschi in the group gives it all a little added value because of the rivalry that is being forged in these last years. Regarding the rest of the teams, they all have a good level also. We still have the question mark on the last rival that will come out of the Qualifying Rounds but Unics, for instance, has shown a great level all year. They are strong in Russia and they won the Eurocup, something that cannot be taken lightly. Olimpija and Prokom had a good season last year also but of course, it is very early in the summer and most of the rosters are yet to be built, so we cannot go into much detail just yet."
Unics Kazan general manager Vladimir Suprianovich:
"It is a very tough group especially when you have a team like Barcelona with its great history and titles in this sport, and also Siena, who had a great last season with good level to reach the Final Four. About the other teams, I think Unics, Union Olimpija and Asseco Prokom have a similar level. For Unics, already being in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague for the first time is a big thing, but we'll have to raise the bar a little and try to set our goal on reaching the Top 16 if possible. It is our obligation to try to be among the first four teams in our group and even though it's still far away, I think it is a realistic goal."
Union Olimpija communications director, Matevz Zupancic:
“With Olimpija being stuck in the fifth level, it is impossible to get an easy group. But we like that because we try to surprise people. Olimpija always likes to host big teams and big names. There are some teams we can beat. “
Montepaschi Siena president Ferdinando Minucci:
"We have a strong group in this regular season, but we are also a strong team, so we must be ready for anything. Playing against Barcelona is becoming a kind of friendly tradition. I hope we can meet again later in the Final Four! About the rest of the teams, Unics is a team that is growing fast. We have to see how they perform at this level, but we will have to be paying attention to everything because in the Euroleague, especially in the regular season, things are never simple and straightforward."
Asseco Prokom head coach Tomas Pacesas
"The group is difficult, but we are not going to complain. We will fight. I hope that this year we will build a team more quickly, so we have a well-prepared team to start the Euroleague. Last season there was a problem with that. The team was built almost at the last moment and that was is reflected on our game and results."
