Zalgiris Kaunas signed playmaker Ty Lawson for the coming season, the club announced Monday. Lawson (1.80 meters, 23 years old) arrives from Denver of the NBA, where he was a teammate of another new Zalgiris signee, Sonny Weems, last season. Lawson averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 assists as a part-time starter for Denver last year, his second with the club. Before that he enjoyed a stellar college basketball career at the University of North Carolina. Lawson led the Tar Heels to the 2009 NCAA championship alongside two other future Turkish Airlines Euroleague players, Deon Thompson and Danny Green of Union Olimpija. That season, Lawson averaged 16.6 points, 6.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year and won the Bob Cousy Award given each year to college basketball's top point guard.
