The Club
As one of the fastest-rising teams in European basketball, Akasvayu Girona was probably the best team in the continent that never played a ULEB Competition. It all will change this season, however, with its first-ever ULEB Cup appearance. Founded in 1962 under the name of C.B. Sant Josep, but became Club Basquet Girona in 1989, right after making it to the top Spanish League (ACB) in 1987. Girona has been a steady ACB team n since that moment, as even when it was relegated to the second division in his first season, it managed to return that very same summer since two other Catalonian teams, Espanyol and Granollers, merged and left a free spot in the competition. The team consolidated its name in the ACB throughout the next decade, but never ranked higher that 11th. It all changed in the 1998-99 season, in which players like Frankie Solana, Rafa Jofresa, Danya Abrams or Larry Stewart took the then-called Girona Gavis to the Spanish League playoffs. That allowed Girona to make its debut in European competitions, making it to the 2000 Korac Cup semifinals in which it lost to soon-to-be champ Limoges. The team kept fighting to make the ACB playoff in the next five years, but it all changed when Akavasvyu opted to invest on the team as its main sponsor. Some of the best European players started to arrive to Girona in summer 2005, such as Raul Lopez, Fran Vazquez, Dainius Salenga or Arriel McDonald, and the team managed to make it to the playoffs, losing in the quarterfinals series against Tau Ceramica. The team returned to European competitions last season and did it style, winning the 2007 FIBA EuroCup by downing Azovmash Mariupol 79-72 behind 25 points from McDonald. The arrival of coach Svetislav Pesic or players such as Marko Marinovic, Marc Gasol, Gregor Fucka or Fernando San Emeterio happen to be decisive for Girona, that also reached higher than ever in the Spanish League - 5th - and is now ready to keep shining in the ULEB Cup. |
