The Club
For the first time in club history, Lithuanian champion Lietuvos Rytas will play back-to-back seasons in the Euroleague. L. Rytas will appear in Europe’s premier competition for the fourth time in sixth years aiming to bounce back and realize its high standards for the 2010-11 season. The club comes off another strong domestic season in which it won the Lithuanian League and the Lithuanian Cup and reached the Baltic League final. However a last-minute home loss against Unicaja, kept L. Rytas away from the Euroleague Top 16 for the first time. In addition to its two previous Top 16 appearances in 2006 and 2008, L. Rytas won the ULEB Cup in 2005 and reached that competition’s final in 2007, just a decade after the club’s foundation. L. Rytas’s creation filled a hole left by what had been Vilnius's first great basketball club, Statyba, which finished third in the Soviet Union championship back in 1979. L. Rytas quickly earned a reputation as a top Lithuanian team and a hard-to-beat squad at any level, as it made it to the 2000 Saporta Cup semifinals, reached the Northern Europe Basketball League (NEBL) final that season and won the Lithuanian League, breaking a decade of domination by Zalgiris. In 2002, L. Rytas cemented its status as a domestic powerhouse by winning the NEBL title and adding another Lithuanian League crown. L. Rytas made its ULEB Cup debut in the 2003-04 season and advanced to the quarterfinals. The club went all the way in 2005, beating Makedonikos for the title and a ticket to the 2005-06 Euroleague. Once in Europe's marquee competition, L. Rytas beat all of its regular season opponents at least once, but losses against Final-Four bound Tau Ceramica and eventual champ CSKA Moscow prevented L. Rytas from reaching the playoffs. Always ambitious, L. Rytas lifted the Baltic League and the Lithuanian League trophies that season. L. Rytas returned to the ULEB Cup Final in 2007, losing against Real Madrid, but earned its way to the Euroleague and defended the Baltic League title. Back in the Euroleague for the 2007-08 season, L. Rytas reached the Top 16, but lost three domestic finals against Zalgiris. Far from being done, L. Rytas bounced back with its best season ever - lifting five trophies. Chuck Eidson was the 2008-09 Eurocup MVP and Marius Petravicius earned Final Eight MVP honors as L. Rytas rallied past Khimki in unbelievable fashion to win its second continental title. L. Rytas added all four possible domestic titles for a dream campaign. Last year L. Rytas won the double crown in Lithuania to keep its spot in the Euroleague. Now with new head coach Drazen Anzulovic calling the shots, a strong fan base that bolsters the club at every home game and a group of hungry young players, L. Rytas looks ready to beat anyone, anywhere next season.
