The Club
A season removed a stunning debut in European competition that saw PGE Turow Zgorzelec reach the 2008 ULEB Cup Final Eight, the Polish League power is looking for more glory. The 2008-09 season was a stern reminder that past success does not mean anything once a new season begins and with that lesson learned, Turow embarks on an important campaign. Founded in 1948, the club opened its basketball section in 1965, bringing out basketball talents such as Mieczyslaw Mlynarski and coach Jan Gruca. Turow won back-to-back Polish League titles in 1977 and 1978, but faded into obscurity for many years, playing in the Polish second and third divisions. The team won the Polish second division regular season in 2003 and was offered a wild card to the top league, but the club rejected it, saying that it wanted to gain promotion to the first division by earning it on court. That happened the following year, as Turow once again won its regular season to advance to the first division. Players like Charles Bennett and Yann Mollinari helped Turow to finish fourth at the end of the 2004-05 regular season, losing against eventual champ Prokom in the semifinals. By then basketball madness had started again in Zgorzelec, as the team consolidated its status with a seventh-place finish in the 2005-06 Polish League, returning to the playoffs only to lose to Anwil Wloclawek in the quarterfinals. That summer Turow went one step forwards by inking head coach Saso Filipovski and building a competitive roster featuring Andres Rodriguez, Dragisa Drobnjak, Thomas Kelati and Lance Williams. Turow was second at the end of the regular season and easily knocked off Stal Ostrow and Slask Wroclaw to make it to the finals. Once again, Prokom stood in Turow's way to success. In the summer of 2007, Filipovski added David Logan to the mix and found success on all fronts, winning seven straight ULEB Cup games at one point en route to the Final Eight, before bowing out to Dynamo Moscow in the quarters. Back home, Turow finished the regular season atop the standings, but lost its quest for the Polish championship in a grueling seven-game finals series against Prokom Trefl. Last year the roster featured a bit more turnover and the club took time to gel, ultimately failing to advance past the Eurocup regular season. It rebounded in time to finish the Polish League in second place and to return to the playoff finals, only to fall once again at the hands of Prokom. Now with the experienced Sasa Obradovic manning the sidelines, Turow is hoping to reach new heights at home and abroad this year.
