The Club
After letting the Last 16 barely slip through their grasp the previous season, this time around Aris BSA has reaching the second stage as its top priority and from there this classic team in European basketball will shoot to add the 2010 Eurocup to its trophy case.
Aris played a crucial role in the development of Greek basketball, to the point of becoming the pride of a nation when it won seven of its 10 domestic titles between 1985 and 1991, relying on legends Nikos Galis and Panagiotis Giannakis to forever change the way the country enjoyed the sport. And to say that basketball is enjoyed in Thessaloniki as intensely as anywhere in the world may, in fact, be an understatement. Aris fans are known world-wide for a passion that is second to none and a colorful support for their team that makes any home game a true event, the embodiment of tradition for the locals and something to see for any visitors.
As visitors themselves, the Aris fans will go to the ends of the earth to provide a sea of yellow as the backdrop to any game their team plays. Thessaloniki had been a basketball city ever since 1919. Aris founded its basketball section in 1922 and by 1930 won its first league title. It took Aris nearly 50 years to repeat that success, winning its second league title in 1979. Soon Aris established itself as a pillar of Greek basketball, winning 81 consecutive domestic games between 1985 and 1988 and reaching the 1985 Korac Cup semifinals. While winning the Greek League-Cup trophy doubles in 1988, 1989 and 1990, Aris also took Greek basketball another step forward by reaching three consecutive Euroleague Final Fours. Aris won its first-ever European Trophy, the Saporta Cup, in 1993, doubling with the Greek Cup title. The club added the Korac Cup in 1997 and another league-cup double in 1998. The team bounced back from several quiet years in 2003 to win the FIBA Champions Cup. Aris extended its run of success with another Greek Cup in 2004 and made a ULEB Cup Final appearance in 2006, as well as two consecutive trips to the Euroleague Top 16 in 2007 and 2008. Back in the Eurocup last year, Aris missed the Last 16 on a tiebreaker and then advanced to the playoff semifinals in the Greek League. With its incredible fan base providing the kind of homecourt advantage that any team in the world would envy, Aris is always a tough team to beat.
It will be the same this season, with a whole city once again getting behind Aris for the chance to will their team deep into the competition and right to the Eurocup title.
